What is the purpose of this research?

This research aims to explore early socialisation processes through objects such as toys, clothes, and room décor in homes. We seek to develop a comprehensive measure that captures the characteristics of children's items, providing valuable insights into how these objects in the home influence early behaviours and identities before children begin to actively express their own preferences and traits.

What does participation in this research involve?

If you choose to participate, you will be asked to complete an online questionnaire via Qualtrics. The survey will ask you to provide demographic information, create a 360-degree video of your child's room or primary play space, and upload detailed photos of toys, clothing, and room décor. It should take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

Who can participate?

We invite expecting parents and parents of children in their first year of life to participate. Participants need to have some level of English language proficiency to participate in this research.

Do I have to take part in this research project?

Participation is entirely voluntary. You may choose to withdraw at any time without consequence.

What are the possible benefits of taking part?

While there are no direct personal benefits to you, your participation will contribute to a deeper understanding of early gender socialisation. Additionally, participants will receive a $20 gift card for their participation.

What are the possible risks and disadvantages of taking part?

There are no foreseeable risks associated with participating in this study. However, you are free to withdraw at any time without penalty.

What if I withdraw from this research project?

You can withdraw at any time during the study by simply exiting the questionnaire or notifying the research team. Your data will not be used if you withdraw.

What happens when the research project ends?

At the end of your participation, the research team will not need any additional personal information. You may contact the researchers in late 2025 to receive a summary of the findings. Your individual results will not be available, but the project’s overall outcomes will be shared.

What will happen to the information about me?

By providing consent, you consent to the research team collecting and using the information provided by you for this research project. No information obtained in connection with this research project can identify you. Further, only members of the research team will have access to the information provided. It will be kept on a password-protected computer program in accordance with the University of Queensland's Research Data Management Policy and the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research (2007).
