Thank you for your interest in participating in this research project. Please read the following information about the project so that you can decide whether you would like to take part in this research. Please feel free to ask any questions you might have about your involvement in the project. You can also talk to someone you trust, like a family member or friend, or your medical practitioner, before deciding if you want to participate.
Participation in this research is voluntary. If you do not wish to take part, you do not have to. If you decide to take part and later change your mind, you are free to stop at any time, and you would not need to give any explanation for your decision to stop participating.
If you decide to take part, you will provide your informed consent by proceeding to complete the study survey. Your decision whether you take part, or not to take part, or to take part and then withdraw, will not affect your relationship with The University of Queensland.
The present study aims to explore the effects of the Healthy Screen Habits Seminar, an online seminar providing parents with information and strategies to promote healthy screen habits in their children. This research has been supported by Research Fee Funding from Triple P International.
If you agree to participate, you will be randomly allocated to either the Start Now or Start Later group.
If you are part of the Start Now, you will be asked to complete an online survey at three time points (Time 1: before participating in the Healthy Screen Habits Seminar, Time 2: two weeks after completing the Healthy Screen Habits Seminar, and Time 3: 3-month follow-up). The survey will explore your perception of your children’s screen time and your parenting experience and should take approximately 20 minutes to complete at each time point. You will be reimbursed for your time in completing the questionnaires after attending the seminar ($20 e-gift card per survey completed at T2 and T3). Reimbursement will be made upon completion of both T2 and T3 questionnaires.
If you are part of the Start Later group, you will be asked to complete an online survey at three time points (Time 1: when you first register, Time 2: four weeks after the first survey, and Time 3: 3-month follow-up). The survey will explore your perception of your children’s screen time and your parenting experience and should take approximately 20 minutes to complete at each time point. You will be reimbursed for your time in completing the questionnaires ($20 per survey completed at T2 and T3). Reimbursement will be made upon completion of both T2 and T3 questionnaires. After T3, you will be invited to participate in the Healthy Screen Habits Seminars.
All seminars will be in an interactive group format, conducted via the Zoom platform. All seminars will be recorded, so an independent reviewer can use the recordings to evaluate the presenter’s adherence to the seminar protocol. Therefore, the recording will only be used to evaluate the presenter’s delivery of the seminar to ensure consistency across seminars. However, we may transcribe sessions to identify points and themes relevant to the aims of this project.
Participation in the study could give you a greater insight into your parenting experience and your children’s behaviours related to healthy screen habits. This insight could help with your understanding of the interaction between yourself and your children. It will also help the researchers and the seminar developers to fine-tune the program to better meet the needs of families who participate in the future. You will not benefit financially from your involvement in this research project even if, for example, knowledge acquired from your information or samples proves to be of commercial value to The University of Queensland
Your participation in the present study is associated with minimal risk. While unlikely, if you do experience distress or discomfort as a result of any of the questions asked, you may leave the question unanswered or contact one of the below helplines for support.
If you have any further concerns, you are encouraged to contact the researcher (via the contact details provided at the top of this page)
